What is Medicaid?
Medicaid is the state-run program that provides health insurance coverage for eligible Kansans, which includes children in foster care, income-eligible children and pregnant women, Kansans with disabilities, some low-income adults, and elderly income-eligible Kansans not covered by Medicare. In Kansas, Medicaid is known as “KanCare.”

Is Medicaid the same thing as Medicare?
No. Medicare is a federally-run program that provides health insurance coverage for Kansas seniors. Medicaid is a state-run program that provides coverage for eligible Kansans.

What are Managed Care Organizations?
MCOs are the health insurance companies the state contracts with to provide managed care services for Kansans covered by Kancare. Kansas contracts with three MCOs: Aetna, Centene and United Healthcare.
